In 1979, science fiction author Robert Heinlein underwent a vascular bypass operation to correct a blocked artery. The technology that enabled Heinlein’s surgery was made possible through spinoff technologies from NASA. Through space development technologies, NASA resources have been utilized by private industry. As a result, we now have access to memory foam, cochlear implants, and nearly 1,800 other products.
Long regarded as America’s brightest minds, NASA and the Glenn Research Center have lent their technical expertise towards a host of technical challenges.
